Support Services-

Club HOPE of Children's Cancer Connection: Club HOPE (Helping Other Parents Endure) is a group that was created by parents.  Club HOPE is a place for parents or other adults who have ever cared for a child with cancer, regardless of that child’s current age, years off treatment, or treatment outcome.  Parents can come to Club HOPE to meet new people who understand what life’s like for a family touched by cancer, share resources, learn, and have fun.  Children’s activities are always provided, and it’s a great way for cancer survivors and siblings to meet new people! Club HOPE currently meets monthly in Iowa City and West Des Moines.

The Survivorship Connection: Children's Cancer Connection provides a fall weekend camp, spring conference, and several annual outings and educational programs as part of The Survivorship Connection.  We understand that young adults (ages 18-39) who are cancer survivors (we consider someone to be a survivor from the second they hear “you have cancer”) have unique needs!  The Survivorship Connection provides opportunities for survivors to meet new friends, engage in fun recreational activities, and take an active role in their survivorship by learning about topics that relate to their own unique needs as a survivor.  Any young adult survivor who lives, goes to school, or received treatment in Iowa is eligible to participate.

Lending Library:  Children's Cancer Connection has a large collection of resources on almost every topic related to childhood cancer, and we are more than happy to share them.  Families and other interested persons are invited to come to our office and visit our library to check out books.  Families outside of the Des Moines area will soon be able to go online and see our listing of books and request that we ship them books!  We are always looking for new resources, so feel free to let us know if you know of a great book we should find or if you are looking for a book on a topic we do not currently have.

Adopt a Family:  Each year local businesses, groups, and individuals help make the holidays brighter for Children's Cancer Connection families who are having financial challenges by gathering holiday gifts.  Cancer can put a strain on family resources including money and time, but it is still important for families to celebrate traditions to have a sense of normalcy and to provide them something to look forward to.  Through the generous donations of others, we are able to help families enjoy a happy holiday in the midst of all the chaos cancer brings.

Referrals and Other Support Programs:  Children's Cancer Connection is committed to meeting the needs of our families, whatever they may be.  Sometimes, another organization provides a service they need, and we are always happy to be able to connect our families to that program.  We are committed to providing excellent programs, but we don’t want to duplicate someone else’s programs.  Sometimes, our families share a need with us and we create a long lasting program that will remain with Children's Cancer Connection for years—Club HOPE and The Survivorship Connection are examples of this.  Other times, our programs are needed for just a short time when several of our families have the same need, and then are “put back on the shelf” until they are needed again—like our grief group or our teen program.  Finally, sometimes we are presented with the opportunity to do unique “one time only” programs.  We always encourage our families to share their needs with us, in hopes that we can either meet them through our programs or connect them to another group!
