Camp Heart Connection Camp Heart Connection Oncology Camp: Oncology Camp provides children with cancer a week of typical camp activities and so much more. Campers are able to spend time with others who are going through the same emotions as they are. Returning campers who are off treatment provide hope to our new campers, and nobody has to worry about not fitting in due to scars or hair loss. Our staff is trained to be sensitive and supportive of all of the campers. Each summer an average of 135 children from around the state of Iowa, as well as western Illinois, southern Minnesota, southeastern South Dakota, and eastern Nebraska attend camp. It is a week of typical camp activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, and field games. The only difference is that all of these children have experienced a life threatening disease. Oncology Camp will be held June 9-15, 2013 To register your camper for Oncology Camp, click here. In addition to submitting your oncology camper’s online application, please submit the following items:
2013 Camper Health Evaluation -- Please have your child's doctor or nurse practioner complete this form. Camp Heart Connection Sibling Camp: Sibling Camp provides siblings of children with cancer the opportunity to be the stars of their own week. We hear from siblings that they are often put on the “back b urner” as the child with cancer receives a lot of attention, and we use sibling camp to make sure they are in the spotlight. Sibling Camp is also a place to share feelings about being shuffled amongst relatives as parents find ways to be present for the child with cancer. Finally, Sibling Camp is a safe place for bereaved siblings to meet other kids coping with the same thing.
Children's Cancer Connection was one of the first organizations to recognize that brothers and sisters of children with cancer have their own special needs. Each summer nearly 160 siblings attend their own special week of camp. While they enjoy the camp activities they share their experiences, their fears, worry, anger, and guilt. Sibling camp is a week that provides the children the limelight that they often miss during their siblings’ treatment. Camp for them is also a place where they find support after the loss of a sibling.
